Also, I tried to import a LR database using the Import tool No way to pick up where it left off or know why it crashed.. Well, I hear you on the bugs, but I am not surprised 50k images take long to import. I find Capture One 8. I haven\’t seen that anywhere else. Raist – I\’d be happy with taking 14 hours I was looking forward to comparing it to LR.. Curves are more precise than colour wheels, but often that precision is unneeded.

I had success using the Tint colour wheels in Aperture for grading, even though they were really designed for removing colour casts in mixed lighting — in fact, those colour wheels were a key reason I chose Aperture over Lightroom, lo those many years ago. CaptureOne is a great application for pro photographers however to install CaptureOne and specifically do an upgrade it is absolute pain.

I have NOT seen application in history of Mac computer being so terribly difficult to install and upgrade. I don\’t understand.

You just download the 8. The easiest upgrade I have done on a Mac. If you installed it initially it is exactly the same process. Did you complain when you first installed it too? I\’ve been using C1 on my Mac for many versions and have never had any problems installing or upgrading to newer versions. The auto check looks for upgrades on start up and you simply click on the upgrade.

I usually close C1 while the new ver is downloading and install the new ver. Finder will ask to replace the old version. I think OBI\’s point is that there is no updater.

With most Mac applications you usually get a window popping up saying there is a new version available with a highlighted button saying \’Update\’ being highlighted just hitting enter is sufficient. Meaning all you have to do is hit enter twice. Then a window popped up in which there was a tiny \’8. Then I had to manually navigate to my downloads folder, double-click the installer image agree to the license , drag the application to the applications folder, confirm that I wanted to replace the existing application which I manually had to quit first.

And then I had to unmount the image and delete it. Yes, the software doesn\’t really update itself, it checks for updates, then it sends you to download the new version and you have to install it over the old one. Basically what Jim described for Mac is what is happening on Windows as well. This is an archaic way to install software and should have been abolished years ago and it has been abolished by most software developers.

Or Adobe\’s subscription model? I\’m cool with that, but I think a lot of people would kick off about it. Phase One is a small independent company who make high end stuff. I would imaging their margins are fairly tight anyway. Their download upgrade system works, and manages your licensing at the same time. Took about 2 mins. Also, if people really can\’t understand this simple process they should probably go and get lightroom or Photos because this is basic stuff.

If that\’s going to trip you up, you\’re not going to enjoy everything that a program like C1Pro has to offer. This application C-1 as is, is an awesome piece of software no question about it. What I am rumbling here about is how to update it. You have to open preferences where you see small blue number of version to which you have to update.

Then after clicking on this small blue number it will take you on PhaseOne www. You have to do some registration which is not working for me for some bizarre reason and so no downloads.

I have to search www and find where the hell this new update is. When I get this update on my desktop running Cocktail application is mandatory otherwise CaptureOne will not install. At least in my Mac computers. Too bad that complaining for some has become the standard. Even over nitty bitty things that aren\’t even worth complaining about.

Meanwhile i\’ve updated, found the time to edit 3 weddings, and baked a cake for my wife\’s birthday. Allow me to challenge that. I just installed the new version and I was welcomed by a poorly written English message asking me to update my catalog. Looks like they need to invest more in their localization team. There is an open source framework called Sparkle on the Mac which allows for this in-app update process, a lot of applications use as it is not very difficult to implement, no need to be on the Mac App Store.

Of course, using Sparkle in cross-platform apps might not be easily possible, you thus will have to write one yourself as Microsoft does for Office and Adobe for its apps. It is not that updating C1 is difficult, it is that writing an updater shouldn\’t be difficult either. Shaving 30 seconds from the update process multiplied with the number of C1 users is a substantial number.

It\’s called attention to detail, making your customers life easier in whichever way you can, and nobody can tell me that they couldn\’t do it with a reasonable effort, there too many apps that have updaters for that be too difficult.
